Players arrived in New York and began training, forging
the foundation for their hopeful playoff run in the 2007-08 season. The
Panthers participated in three solid days of training and completed a
night-time version of Operation: Vanguard Forge. JB Spisso stated that “Despite
the lack of moonlight during the night training it was all motivation and
dedication from the Florida Panthers.” JB was very impressed by their
core of both young players and veterans and especially liked the
leadership of their Captain Olli Jokinen. “He comes from a military
background and you can see that leadership both on and off the ice. He is
a man you can follow into battle,” commented JB.
Excerpts from Article: Going Commando- By
Dave Joseph for floridapanthers.com
“It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done,” said forward David
Booth.
Spisso, along with 10 consultants, barked orders at the
Panthers while they spent approximately 40 minutes trying to accomplish
each task. A group, led by Bryan
Allen, was asked to ‘rescue a pilot’ in the swamp while
it was still daylight. But that group then had to build a shelter and
solar still in total darkness. “It was a different experience,” he
added. “You have to read and react to the situation. It was a great
event for everybody. You have to pull together and you have to be mentally
tough. There’s guys (consultants) yelling at you, but you have to deal
with that on the road when the fans give it to you.”
